Edmund Zheng is a Chinese-American hypnotist who performs in five languages. He is the first hypnotist to take a single show across the world in the audience's own tongue, on stage in Portuguese in Brazil, in Spanish in Argentina, and in French, Mandarin, and English as the tour continues.
His path is unusual. He knocked on the door of a comedy club in São Paulo asking how to get on stage, and within weeks was performing a hypnosis show in Portuguese. He has since built a body of work across two continents, from theatres and comedy clubs to private events and an artist residency exploring hypnosis, movement, and dance.
The through-line is a simple thesis: hypnosis is not a party trick, it is the cutting edge of human communication, and it works below the level of any one language. Every show is one more dent in the idea that Americans only speak English.
